H.E Ambassador Mehreteab Mulugeta Haile was born on October 4, 1961, in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia. He is married to Aida Dibaba Biratu, and together they have two children. H.E Ambassador Mehreteab's educational background includes an MSc Degree in Economics from Ivanova State University in Russia (1983-1989) and a Russian Language Diploma from Kharkov University in Ukraine (1982-1983). He also holds a Diploma in Administrative Science from Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia (1978-1981) and obtained his Ethiopian School Leaving Certificate from Notre Dame School in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia (1974-1977). His special training includes a Diplomacy Training Certificate from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, completed between January and March 1992. H.E Ambassador Mehreteab is fluent in Amharic, English, and Russian, with basic proficiency in German and Korean. In his professional experience, H.E Ambassador Mehreteab has held numerous high-ranking positions within the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Chief of Cabinet to the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Ethiopia from November 2020 to April 2022, and Director General of Europe and the European Union from February 2019 to 2020. He was appointed Ambassador Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary on March 18, 2020. His international postings include service as Consul General in Frankfurt, Germany (2015-2019), and various diplomatic roles in India and South Korea. Throughout his career, he has represented Ethiopia at multiple international conferences and high-level meetings, including the 59th and 76th United Nations General Assemblies, IGAD summits, and the Assembly of the African Union. Additionally, he served as Deputy Chair of the National Committee for the 35th Ordinary Session of the African Union in Addis Ababa in 2022.
